Which Fragrance Suits Me? A Guide for Men

Six fragrance families, four questions and a testing method that works: how to work out systematically which men’s fragrance suits you – instead of guessing your way through the perfumery.

Mann hält einen Parfumflakon ans Gesicht – Duftauswahl für Herren

Most men buy their fragrance like this: they walk into a perfumery, have five strips sprayed for them, can no longer smell anything after the third and take the one whose bottle looks best. That rarely works. There is a systematic way – and it does not take any longer.

The short version

You find the right fragrance in three steps: narrow down the fragrance family, test no more than two candidates on the skin per visit, and decide only after at least four hours. The most common mistake is buying on the first impression – that belongs to the top note and is over after fifteen minutes.

  • Six fragrance families cover practically every men’s fragrance
  • Two fragrances are enough: one for warm weather, one for cold
  • Always test on the skin, never decide on paper
  • Two fragrances per visit at most – after that the nose barely tells them apart

Step 1: Narrow down the fragrance family

Almost all men’s fragrances can be assigned to six families. Once you know which one you feel at home in, you have already made ninety per cent of the choice.

Family Typical notes Effect Suits
Fresh / aquatic Bergamot, lemon, marine notes Clean, unobtrusive, young Summer, sport, the office
Aromatic / fougère Lavender, sage, coumarin, oakmoss Classically masculine, well groomed Everyday wear, work, all year round
Woody Cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver Calm, grown-up, understated The office, autumn, everyday wear
Spicy Cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg Warm, present, full of character Autumn, winter, evening
Sweet-woody / oriental Vanilla, tonka bean, amber, tobacco Close, sensual, memorable The cold months, evening, dates
Leathery / smoky Leather, birch tar, oud, frankincense Angular, distinctive, polarising Evening, special occasions

One shortcut works surprisingly well: think of smells you like in everyday life. Freshly sawn wood, cinnamon in the kitchen, an old leather jacket, wet earth after rain, citrus peel. Whichever of those draws you in almost always points towards the right family.

Step 2: Four questions that halve the field

  1. When will you mainly wear the fragrance? During the working day you need something that carries a metre, not five. In the evening it can be more.
  2. In which season? Cold swallows light notes, heat amplifies sweetness. There is more on this in our piece on fragrances for autumn and winter.
  3. How close do people get to you? Anyone in an open-plan office or on crowded trains should choose something restrained – or simply apply less.
  4. Do you want to stand out or fit in? Both are legitimate. A leathery, smoky fragrance gets commented on; an aromatic one is rarely noticed and rarely found intrusive.

Step 3: Testing properly

How you test decides more about the quality of the purchase than the shortlisting that came before it. Here is how:

  • On the skin. Paper only shows the opening. The base reacts to warmth and pH only on skin.
  • Two per visit at most, one on each forearm. After that the nose is overwhelmed.
  • No coffee beans. The widespread trick does not reset the sense of smell, it merely distracts it. Fresh air works better.
  • Walk away. Leave the shop, do something else, smell again after two hours and after five.
  • Ask someone. After two hours you barely notice your own fragrance. Other people still do.

What you are experiencing there – the shift from top to heart to base – is explained in our piece on top note, heart note and base note.

How many fragrances do you really need?

Two. One for warm months and daytime situations, one for the cold and for evenings. Those who own more still tend to wear two of them in practice.

More interesting than the number is the question of concentration. For a fragrance that has to see out the day, an eau de parfum is the safe choice; an eau de toilette suits heat and confined spaces.

What you can safely ignore when choosing

  • Age recommendations. There is no fragrance family that becomes unsuitable from a certain year of birth. Only the dose and the occasion change.
  • The length of the list of notes. Twenty notes named do not mean more quality than five. Often the short list is the more honest one.
  • Reviews from people with different skin. No review can tell you whether a fragrance turns creamy or powdery on you.
  • The label “unisex” or “for men”. It describes a marketing decision, not a property of the liquid.

If you lean towards sweet-woody

Then Braise #1 is a candidate. The fragrance opens spicy with cardamom, pink pepper and bergamot, grows warmer through cinnamon, iris and clary sage, and ends in a base of vanilla, tonka bean, tobacco, sandalwood and amber. Eau de parfum, 50 ml, composed and bottled in Germany.

It is not an all-rounder. In high summer and in a crowded open-plan office it is the wrong choice. For cool evenings spent standing close to one another, it is built for exactly that.
